I have looked that up and found that R38 batts are about 12" thick. With 2x6 (or even 2x8) rafters, 1" air baffles for the vented attic and a slope so low that the ceiling joists and roof rafters ... WebIn the side attics the insulation was peeled back from underneath the roof vents, so they are not covered. There are NOT any insulation baffles in the rafters connecting the side attic and ceiling attic. Question 1: Should there be insulation baffles, or is it okay to not have them since warm air can vent through the vents in the side attic.

You can spray foam the existing rafter space and install batts into the cross strapping. The cross strapping does most of the job of eliminating thermal bridging without having to install rigid above the roof.
